NFL teams are required to cut their rosters down to 53 from 75 this Saturday.
And while I have stated on several occasions that I'm not sure that Kevin Smith is deserving of a roster spot, the organization appears to disagree with me...so I'm not going to harp on that anymore--beyond saying that letting go of either Aaron Brown, who could be very good, or DeDe Dorsey, a special teams demon, in favor of Smith or Morris is probably a big mistake.
Instead of talking about that, I'm going to concentrate on players from other teams that may get cut who would be definite upgrades for the Lions.
Cincinnati CB David Jones - Jones is a 6'0, 200 lb defensive back who is only 24 years old and is simply being squeezed out of a Bengal team that has completely overloaded themselves with defensive backs--attacking the position multiple times via not only high draft picks, but first round draft picks and also through free agency. Jones is a very solid player who will not last long if he doesn't make it through final cuts.
Recent injuries to Adam Jones and Brandon Ghee may save Jones from the final cut, but when they return healthy, he could be headed for the waiver wire.
Denver CB Alphonso Smith - Alphonso Smith is a 5'9 defensive back with great return ability who the Denver Broncos simply paid way too high of a price to get. He didn't deserve to be a high pick and the Broncos were fool enough to give away multiple picks to get him. He may also prove to be such a disappointment that he could be cut this year, just one year after being drafted.
Obviously, he is in a bad situation in Denver. A position he probably never should have been put in. But is he any good? Can he be much worse than Eric King? Truthfully, nobody really knows and the Lions wouldn't exactly be taking much of a gamble in order to find out. Also, he can be a dynamic return man.
Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson - Johnson may now be out of the doghouse in Kansas City, but there is still a remote chance the former 1st round pick out of Texas could lose out on his position battle and become available. This is definitely more hope than anything else. Zach Follet isn't cutting it and DeAndre Levy has been having a hard time staying out of the tub....
Anybody notice...
that the Ravens just sent a fifth round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for CB Josh Wilson? Now, this makes sense for the Ravens who's secondary is just as depleted and pathetic as the Lions -- theirs due to injuries, the Lions due to Matt Millen... But I thought the Lions had the open channel to the Seahawks. Look at the Lions roster...like 25% of it or something is made up of former Seattle players. Yesterday the Lions traded an offensive tackle that wasn't going to make the squad to Seattle for an undisclosed draft pick...why couldn't Wilson have been part of that deal? Who knows...
